Choosing a career in medicine is tough. Studying medicine consumes multiple hours of work, maintaining the static level of concentration and dedication towards the studies, months of volunteering, and many exams to earn that reputed degree of MBBS.
But along with the number of students opting for MBBS education, stress, depression, and suicide cases among medical students and doctors are growing concerns in the medical community.
Following are some tips to help MBBS aspirants deal with the pressure of studies:
Get enough sleep: As medical students, you need to grasp a lot from books which requires your concentration and proper sleep. Make sure you do not compromise your health, both physically and mentally. Losing sleep can increase stress, anger, and exhaustion, so it is best to get at least seven hours of sleep.
Engage yourself with physical activity: It is one of the best ways to reduce stress. Physical activities can help you reduce anxiety, depression, and stress levels. Medical students don’t have to worry about sparing time to go to the gym. Exercise for 30 minutes or more can help in stress reduction. Tiring yourself out with physical activity will also improve your sleep, which further reduces stress levels.
Meditation: Relaxation techniques such as meditation and taking deep breaths help ease stress and anxiety. Medical students can reduce their stress by placing a hand on their stomach and matching the mantra to their breathing. Avoid distracting thoughts and focus on breathing.
Eat healthy foods: Being a medical student you won’t have much time to cook. You will find yourself eating junk food, takeout, or cafeteria food in a hospital. Such foods contain fatty acids, worsening your stress level.
Some healthy foods that help manage stress:
➔ Dark Chocolate: They are rich in antioxidants. They reduce stress hormones, blood pressure, cholesterol and have mood-boosting capabilities.
➔ Omega-3 Fatty Acids–Consuming foods rich in omega-3s are avocados, tuna, salmon, herring, and sardines, which will help you lower stress, anxiety, and depression.
➔ Citrus Fruits–Include Vitamin C-containing fruits in your diet routine. Oranges, strawberries, and grapefruit help you relieve stress.
Reach out to others: Take a small break, while you are feeling stressed, meet up with your friends or family. Develop relationships with fellow medical students and other peers. Being socially active can help you reduce stress because medical students can discuss their problems, frustration, and get advice in return. Talking with someone helps you gain perspective and develop strategies for coping when they feel overwhelmed and stressed.
Time Management: The stress which medical aspirants feel while pursuing MBBS in Ukraine, MBBS in Russia, MBBS in Bangladesh, or any other country doesn’t vary from one country to another. An MBBS course that requires tons of knowledge can be mentally exhausting. It’s best to have a fixed timetable such that you will know the next task that needs to be completed, and that you’ll have the time to cover everything you need.
